A spending cleanse is choosing to not spend a single cent for an entire week.  Although this might seem impossible, it’s more achievable than it sounds.  Although it is important to remember that the choice to partake in a spending cleanse has to be for your own benefit not for anyone else and it has to be your own personal choice, not a suggestion from friends or peer pressure.

The article on Frugaling details the reasons behind the spending cleanse, we have listed the 10 points here.

  1. Follow Rules
  2. Ignore Critics
  3. Stay Purposeful
  4. Control Urges
  5. Find Free Things
  6. Be Prepared
  7. Recognize Accomplishments
  8. Seek Support
  9. Make Do
  10. Try this experiment

It is worth a try, if you could limit your weekly spending to two out of four weeks of the month, imagine how much money you would save during the other two weeks of the month, which could go towards debts or savings.

I have done a few of these and was only able to do it because of how my bill schedule was set up. It does feel good to not spend any money.
