Landing a job feels like a huge achievement, and it is. However, if you want to do well and make the most of your talents it is very important not to simply sit back and relax at that stage.

You need to continue to improve your skill set and gain experience to keep yourself as employable as possible. Doing so will help you to secure jobs in a competitive market, and continue to be paid well.

Connect with your new HR team

Naturally, when you start a new job you want to impress. You especially want to make a good impression on your new boss, and the rest of the team.

This is understandable, and is, of course, extremely important. However, this should not be your only goal.

If you want to progress as fast as possible in your new company, you need to start to network from day one. Given the fact that most of your early contact will be with the HR department it makes sense to start there.

However, there is another good reason for building a strong relationship with the HR team. The fact that they will be involved in determining who is promoted and fills internal positions means that you want to impress from the outset.

Having a good connection with this department brings other benefits too. Most human resources teams now use modern HR software, like that sold by cascadehr.co.uk, to help them to run the department. This has allowed many companies to give responsibility for training staff to the HR department. They play a big role in deciding on who is trained and what type of training they get. Once you are seen as someone who is worth investing in you are put on the fast track for promotion. You can use the training that is offered to help you to progress internally. In addition, later, should you want to, you could move on. The fact you have continued to hone and build your skill set will set you apart from many other candidates. Generally speaking, the more current your training and qualifications are the more attractive you will be to other employees.

As you can see getting to know your HR team and working with them makes a lot of sense. However, you need to be careful with this approach. It is important to build your relationship with the members of the team in a natural way.

You also need to be careful not to circumvent your line manager. He or she will always be part of the decision-making process when your company decides which employers are worth investing in by providing training. Therefore, you need them on your side too. Ambition is good, but you need to take a balanced approach. Doing so will stop you from appearing too pushy, and isolating your colleagues.
