Top tips for students when selling a MacBook Pro

by Leave a Comment

Being a student can be expensive. There’s student financing to think about, the cost of your accommodation, food and transport, and even equipment. Although there are grants and bursaries you can apply for to help support you through your days at university, you might still need to make some quick cash for emergency expenditures.

Selling your laptop is probably not the first thing to do to make money unless it is to upgrade your laptop. For computing degrees, design qualifications and a whole host more, having an up-to-date laptop with the right software is essential.

If you are a student who needs to update their old MacBook Pro and make some cash for a new one, here are my top tips to prepare your computer for resale.

Repair any damages

Repairing any faulty hardware is important if you want to resell your old MacBook Pro. Check your keyboard for missing or faulty keys, your screen for missing pixels and ensure that all your MacBook Pro’s component parts are working as they should.

Sign out of your accounts

Securing your data is essential when selling any electronic device, especially a computer. Make sure you sign out of all accounts on your MacBook before you sell. This includes iCloud, iMessage, Google and any financial accounts you have open to protect your data.

Install the latest software

Selling your MacBook Pro with the latest Mac OS installed will increase its sale price and potential for selling. If your MacBook Pro is very old, you might not be able to update to the latest software and it is worth checking before you try and sell as it will impact your sale price.

Check your model’s value

Checking your model’s value is important so you know how to price your MacBook Pro for resale. You can check the value of other similar models online or go to a dedicated resale site to check their offer price on your MacBook Pro model.

Check your model’s spec

Checking your model’s specifications in the Apple menu will help you identify your MacBook Pro’s ram, hard drive space and more. This is important when reselling. Higher spec models will be more desirable to buyers. Especially those who need powerful MacBook Pros for design or motion work.

Restore factory settings

Wiping all your files and data from your computer is also essential when selling your tired old MacBook Pro. Restore the factory settings to ensure that nothing personal is left hanging around on your hard drive. Be careful though and make sure that you have backed up all of your files before you restore factory settings so that you do not lose important files.
