It’s a hard life being a woman. It’s expensive too; an article in The Independent revealed that the average lifetime spend of women in the UK on cosmetics alone was a staggering £140,000. Of course life doesn’t have to be so expensive, and here are some ideas how to cut the costs for all women.
- Dye your hair at home
Going to the hairdressers on a monthly basis to have your roots tinted or your hair dyed can be a costly business. Disposable Gloves and some hair dye are the answer. It might be a good idea to call on the services of a friend if you are a newcomer to the procedure as you won’t want your dye to go all around the kitchen or bathroom.
- Home manicure
You don’t have to visit a beauty salon to have a perfect manicure. You can quite easily file and paint your nails yourself if you take some time, and you’ll save yourself around £18 a week.
- Magazines and newspapers
Thanks to the advent of the internet you can read all of your favourite magazines and newspapers online. Some of these are free; others will require a subscription. Just think, you’ll no longer be cluttering up your home with discarded papers, and you’ll be doing your bit towards conservation.
- Clothes needn’t cost a fortune
If you make sure you only invest in new shoes, or clothes at sale times you’ll save a fortune. Why pay the standard retail price in November, when the same garments will probably be reduced in January?
- Alternative to annual gym membership
You really don’t have to subscribe to annual gym membership if you want to keep fit and healthy. An article in The Daily Telegraph suggested that monthly or even pay as you go membership is becoming a trend. You’ll still be eligible for discounts but you won’t be tied in to an expensive subscription.
- Hire a ‘posh frock’
If you have a special event coming up, but you know that you’ll only wear an evening dress on a few occasions throughout the year, then this is the time to investigate renting a dress. There are several websites that offer this facility and you’ll save hundreds of pounds.
- Fake tan
The TV programme ‘The Only Way is Essex’ has a lot to answer for, including the trend for fake tan. Our bodies were never intended to be orange, so why not cut down or eradicate the trips to the tanning parlour?
- Have baking parties
The current trend for baking means that many people have rediscovered their kitchens. If you have a group of friends who have aspirations towards ‘kitchen goddess’ status, then why not have an evening or weekend baking session, and then swap your home made goodies?
- Swap books
Some quiet time with a good book is invaluable. Books can be expensive, so see if you can sign up to a free book-swapping scheme. Alternatively patronise your local charity shop or library.
10. Car share
When travelling to work, either use a bike, or if you have to drive then organise a car pool with a group of friends. It’ll cut down on daily petrol costs.
