A new trend has been spreading all across America which has been dubbed the “Obamadodge” where employers are dropping their permanent staff member’s hours to below the designated 30 hours a week so that they do not face penalties for not offering additional services such as medical care to their employers.
This means that there are a lot of people who are forced to take part-time work where they would prefer to have full time positions and the security that a full time position offers. This new trend not only affects the forced part-time worker, as their health deteriorates, they battle financially because their outrageous hours make it almost impossible to have multiple part-time jobs and their stress levels rise considerably, but it also affects the whole family, children included.
The article on AlterNet explains how forced part-time work affects everyone. The question is, how can one overcome this new trend if employers are only interested in hiring part-time workers?
