It is common knowledge that the security of a particular position is no longer a certainty, when you look back at the positions available only a few years ago you can see the different positions that have become available as companies have moved to automating processes.

The article on Nutmegonomics lists three factors which are relevant to the choices that you will make regarding your future in various positions.

Time – The phrase ‘time is money’ is not only relevant to business people who charge for their services, the amount of time you spend in one company and one position is quickly dwindling with the most common term of service being four years.

Planning – Planning for retirement or any large monetary investment is no longer based on dedicated positions where you want to remain till you retire.  Mapping out plans for your future can no longer be left to the employer, you might not plan on leaving a particular company within a period of time, but being prepared for this financially relieves the stress of the situation.

Machines – The progression towards automation is gaining speed as companies realize it is more cost effective to have their manufacturing done by machine, so the future positions are more suitable to people who can support the machinery than the people that the machines replace.

Although these thoughts do make it seem like there is little hope left for the person who has a passion for hands on type of jobs, it is important to be aware of how companies are moving so that you can adapt accordingly.
