Financial Help for Single Mothers

by Leave a Comment

One of the many challenges that face women today is being a single mother.  Many women can find raising children alone easier with just a little bit of help.  Oftentimes it is financial matters weighing close to the heart –and also causing the most strain in raising the kids.  Thankfully, there are numerous resources available to help with her task.

Single Mother Resources

Mothers who find themselves in need of help do have resources available to them. The resources that are available vary according to the area that you live.

Some common types of financial help for single mothers available in the UK include:

Child Maintenance

Child maintenance is financial support paid to the mother from the parent of the child who is not the primary day-to-day caregiver, ie, the father of the child. It is the responsibility of the absent parent to support their child, and with a contact the Child Maintenance Organization the support can be ordered and paid.

Jobseeker’s Allowance

If you are unemployed and actively searching a job, Jobseeker’s Allowance is available. Your exact circumstances determine the amount that you will receive.

Income Support

Income support is available to single mothers who are not working on a full-time basis. There are certain qualifications that must be met to qualify for this assistance. Learn about different loan assistance programs for emergencies through the government and non-profits.

Childcare Costs

If you are working and need help paying for childcare costs, it is available as long as you meet certain financial requirements. This credit enables you to receive up to 70% reimbursement for costs paid to registered child care providers.

Housing Benefit

If you are a single parent who is also living on a low income, a housing benefit may be available to you. This housing benefit helps cover the costs of your housing and helps to lessen the stress of having less money and raising your child or children.

Mortgage Assistance

If you currently receive another type of financial assistance, mortgage help may also be something that you qualify for if you own your home. To be approved for the mortgage help you must have been receiving additional aid for a period of more than 13 weeks, as well as meet other financial requirements.

Prescription Help

Another beneficial item for single mother’s financial assistance, prescription help is available to those receiving Income Assistance. Under the program all prescription medications that are needed are provided free of charge.

Help when it is needed

In addition to these sources of financial help, be sure that you take advantage of the Child Tax Credit each year when filing taxes. This can equal a hefty sum of money if you file, or greatly reduce the amount of taxes that you owe.  You may also find other financial help available, although not primarily targeted for a single mother.

The help available for single mother’s changes frequently, thus you should check often to learn about the latest financial assistance that is available to you. When the situation calls for a helping hand, seek and you will find. Do not miss out on the help that is available to you.
