When you think back about 50 years you might remember the prediction of John Maynard Keynes where he stated that by the turn of the century the working week would be shorter than normal, yet if you look at how things are going now you actually working longer hours, but do you feel like your job is pointless?

Thirty years ago shops would close by 5pm during the week, restaurants would be open till 9pm and the office hours of most employees were 9 – 5, now with advances in technology and increased demand for services supermarkets only close at 8pm and your boss can still get you on our mobile phone at 11pm.

The advances in technology were expected to lower the working hours of individuals not raise them, and technology was expected to replace human positions in all industries.  Instead what has happened is that more jobs have been created and with mobile phones people are always accessible.

Does this mean that your job is pointless and if you had to vanish off the face of the earth that no one would realize it? No, mostly because each job that has been created over history has been out of necessity, and if you did happen to vanish your boss would have to find a replacement.
