It has recently been reported that London police spend almost £11,000 per DAY to stake out the Ecuadorian embassy where Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks has been hiding for the last 386 days.
The mayor of London criticized the high cost of the stake out and the metropolitan police have begun negotiations with the home office to be reimbursed.
Julian Assange entered the Ecuadorian embassy last year in June as he attempted to avoid being extradited to Sweden where he is to face charges of sexual assault and rape. He was granted political asylum by Ecuador in August last year, but the police stake out is to ensure that Julian does not leave the building.
The concern is that the money spent on staking out the Ecuadorian embassy for international political reasons could be better spent on frontline policing and crime prevention within London.
